The Bath Poetry Cafe was commissioned by Bath & North East Somerset Arts Development to present a programme of centennial readings for each year of the Great War. The events are Free and open to all, with donations accepted for the Royal British Legion, whose representatives attend all the performances.
Our first programme showcased some of the best known poems of 1914 with short paragraphs of linking narrative. The programmes for the next three years have been more adventurous, the poems sharing space with prose of the period and accompanied by powerpoint presentations of archival photographs and work by the official war artists. The Poetry Cafe readers have also been joined by singers from the Walcot State Choir whose presentations of popular songs of the war years have given our shared programmes much greater resonance and depth.
